First to Burn Immortal Vikings Book 1 edition by Anna Richland Romance eBooks
My Review:Whoa, this book was so creative. I am completely blown away by just how much there was to this story.
There's the whole backstory to the Immortals that served with Beowulf. Wulf is just one of them and he serves now with a spec ops team in Afghanistan. He's the only immortal on this team and they work hard to protect his secret...mainly because he's saved them all so many times. It's a serious advantage to have a guy on a team like this who can't be killed. Can you imagine? We only actually meet a couple of other of the immortals in this book although obviously with the series, they are all going to come out.
There's the romance between Wulf and Theresa. In a normal world, their relationship is forbidden. She's an officer, he's enlisted....no fraternization is supposed to take place between the two. But there's also the fact that she comes from a Jersey mob-boss family. She wants nothing in the world, but to be normal. That is NOT Wulf's world. There's also the added complication of the fact he's 1500 years old and only looks 28. Yeah, she's not immortal....that's not going to work long term.
Wulf's world is NOT easy. Regardless of the whole immortal thing, he and the spec ops team are delving into highly dangerous things that are happening in the dark corners of Afghanistan featuring drugs and government contractors. Someone doesn't want them to find anything else about what's going on and everyone, but especially it seems Theresa, is at risk.
This book's story travels the world as they run to uncover the mysteries of what is going on. From the sandswept slopes of Afghanistan, to the sewers in Italy, to medieval castles in Denmark, to the suburbs of NYC, Theresa and Wulf definitely cover the globe as they search for answers. The book delved into the depths of the Beowulf story which I haven't thought about since high school English and was a great intro into this incredible world.
I loved that Wulf is a soldier. But even more than that, this is a man who has lived so long, he's really become a solitary figure. But that changed when he joined the spec ops team. I loved their bond and how for the first time in a long time, Wulf has found a place he belongs. In contrast, he also has a brother who's an immortal too, but they do not see eye to eye and have grown WAY apart. Something happened to his brother in this book that is going to leave lasting repercussions for all the immortals and I can't wait to see how that plays out. It also plays into Theresa's job as a doctor. I was completely fascinated by that whole aspect of the story and can't wait to see what happens from here.
Like I said, this was a great new start to a new world. It's paranormal, but set in the modern world and I loved that. I can't wait to read more from this author. She tells me there is a novella coming in Oct, 2014 featuring one of the characters from Wulf's spec ops team (not paranormal...although Wulf and Theresa will make an appearance) and then the next full-length paranormal of the Immortal Vikings (book #2) will be out in Jan, 2015. I can't wait!

First to Burn Immortal Vikings Book 1 edition by Anna Richland Romance eBooks Reviews
I liked this book because it had a unique "immortals" story behind it, linked with a special forces team, which was fantastic. I thought the story was a slow start, and it was probably due to building the environment and backstory, but it did finally catch me and pull me in. The heroine sometimes seemed brave and sometimes silly, and I would say she was the weak link for me. She never fully materialized and at times could be kick-ass, and other times she seemed like the helpless female trope. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series, especially Ivar's story. (This is the first book in the series, and stands alone well, so don't hesitate to go ahead and read it without waiting for the others.) All in all, I recommend the book and the series.
Who would have thought that hunting with Beowulf would cause a person to become immortal? But it happened to Wulf and it has been a hard life for a warrior. Now he is in Afghanistan, his unit knows his secret, But the doctor who treats him for wounds doesn't and is astonished at the way he heals.
Would read the second in the series.
I was reading this on the airplane, and my teenage son was so interested in it he kept peeking over my shoulder to read. You won't believe this is a debut, because it's so accomplished, especially the writing and the authenticity of the voices and settings.
It's a real genre bender, essentially a paranormal because the hero is an immortal viking living in the present day, but it's also military themed, since both he and the heroine are in the military (serving in Afghanistan), and there are suspense elements as the story progresses.
The author is a former army officer, and it shows, because the military parts of the book feel absolutely genuine, especially the slang and culture, which I found fascinating (and sometimes humorous).
Equally genuine is the sexual tension between the hero and heroine, who are attracted to each other from the start but cannot act on it--at least not right away--because of his secrets and her taking seriously the army's rules about fraternization. This is not a light and fluffy story, but if you like a more emotional, adventurous romance with a strong sense of culture and place, this one's for you.
First to Burn was a fantastic mix of technical military logistics from someone who obviously knows what it's like to be enlisted, and a sizzling romance between two soldiers barely able to keep their hands off each other. One is a doctor and the other is an immortal Viking on a special forces unit in Afghanistan. If you don't usually buy into paranormal romance, don't worry. Richland handles Wulf's strange abilities with finesse, choosing to lightcoat his immortality and only remind of us his supernatural aspects when it relates to the story. It's totally believable.
Probably the most fascinating part of the book for me was Richland's use of military terminology and procedures, then switching to her knowledge of Rome. This new author has the ability to put her reader right inside the scene as though we are another character. I loved hanging out in Afghanistan and then flying to Rome to sightsee while Wulf and Theresa navigate the sewer system and run for their lives. I liked the leads, enjoyed the story and loved the writing.
Richland is clever, funny, knowledgeable and can weave a great, heart-pounding tale. Highly recommended to any romance reader.
