4.5 stars, but am rounding up.

First of all... awesome cover! Second, love the fact the book was well edited (seems to be a rarity these days, particularly with self-published novels).

I love how the author populated Mars... so descriptive and comprehensive... I could clearly picture everything as if I was seeing the movie &/or was along for the ride. The author *really* thought through every aspect of the cities, monetary system, transportation, housing, etc. The back-story of how androids and humans came to be on Earth was well thought out. The science behind their technology seemed believable. There was well-placed humor throughout (I always look for humor in books, particularly books with heavy themes... they need a little comic relief!). The parallels between discrimination of androids and things we see in our society are excellent. Retta, the main character, is strong, opinionated, and a great champion for her cause.

Only slight quibbles (that didn't detract from my enjoyment) were... lots of tell instead of show early on as Retta attended classes and researched information about the androids. I thought the romance might have been a little rushed (I realize they spent time together, getting to know each other that wasn't described or belabored), but it felt a little instant.

Other bonuses: Action scenes were good. Liked how the characters each evolved to be more understanding and tolerant of differences. Good resolution at the end, with room left for sequels, but didn't feel like I was left hanging (not that I mind cliffhangers, but...).

Blue Hearts of Mars Nicole Grotepas 9781482305357 Books Reviews

Retta seemed like every other protagonist in this kind of genre. A teenager in her last year of school who was raised by one parent alone so she had some issues because of her Mom’s death. Of course she found a hot guy to swoon over and fall in love with within a heartbeat. I did like that she openly took a stand against the general beliefs even though it was triggered by her falling in love with an android. She handled the break up pretty good and I was feeling for her until she started talking about going with him in hiding and stuff. Well, they weren’t together at this point and it was awkward but suddenly without any build up or realization they’re planning on running away together.

Mei was a weird character. At times she sounded like an awesome best friend any girl would want to have and at others a total flake. I mean she broke in to that Synlife building with Retta risking getting in trouble for her twice but then she totally betrayed her when siding with those popular girls. I just couldn’t get my head around it.

Hemingway was a total hotty at the beginning but then he became a total jerk. I understood why he broke up with Retta and I was feeling it but then after her attack I thought he came to his senses and they’d go back together. That’s what Retta thought, too, but he was kissing her one second and then the next telling her that being with an android was easier for him. I so wished right then Retta would slap him.

I was a little confused about the running away thing. It wasn’t an immediate threat so why do it? They put themselves on the IRS radar only when they got to that contact in New Tokyo and even more so when Retta posted about her finds on the web. I found that marriage ceremony a little ridiculous and unnecessary. They themselves realized they know very little about each other and it kind of felt like the author had to take the safe road with the whole “waiting until marriage” thing. And then all of a sudden Marta gets sick and they head home. Why isn’t anyone there to arrest them or whatever? They’re running all over the place hiding from the IRS with Retta’s face on the news and people turning her in but at home nobody bothers them as if they’re oblivious to everything. They actually have to explain themselves to their friends and family as if they know nothing about Rhetta posting that stuff on the web and Synlife offering an award for any information about her whereabouts. Just weird.

But all in all it was a uniquely written story and I enjoyed reading it even though the “revolution” was over pretty quickly and everyone was happy.
Blue Hearts of Mars is a difficult book for me to review. The book was not bad. It had an interesting plot, good pacing, and some beautifully strung together words. That being said, the characters where unlikable and if I had to sum up the book in one word Preachy.
The first page of the book starts with insta-love, instant insta love. After reading the entire book I never felt this great connection between Retta and Hemmingway. I never understood why there was this great undying love for each other. Retta is a rude, selfish, shallow, bratty, fickle girl. I kept thinking she was this way so we could watch this magnificent change, nope. She is unlikable through-out the book. And Hemmingway is a wet rag of an android. He lets everyone push him around even though he is supposed to be so much stronger and smarter.
Bits of the world don’t make sense either. Like androids are inferior and even though they look identical to humans it is illegal for them to date us. Yet no one knows who the androids are, not even other androids. It’s illegal to be with an android yet Retta runs down a busy street holding hands and kissing Hemmingway eager to bring him to her house so she can rub it in her Dad’s face and make him miserable. And this is after talking to him twice.
Hemmingway preaches buying local and organic goods. Retta is talked to like a toddler as we all get rather blatantly schooled about it. Then we get another dose of how the media twists things. It isn’t even cleverly veiled so that we can learn the lesson by epiphany, it is crammed down your throat. And yes, the same is done for human rights and conservation of resources.
Quote from the book
Retta - “Those signs are telling us to conserve resources while consuming resources to tell us that”
Hemmingway - “The eternal quandary of government”.
After declaring their undying love for one another for about half of the book another girl asks Hemmingway what he likes to do for fun. Retta realizes she has no idea and has never thought about asking him what any of his interests are, yet is still hopelessly in love. She doesn’t know him!
The government has all this technology, enough to make artificial heart and organs for the androids that are identical to humans but no one has ever thought about using any of it for the health of humans? And pretty much all health care or research into human health has stopped?
This book has a lot of holes and parts that just didn’t seems to fit for me. Maybe if I was younger I would have found all the preaching to be more eye opening and therefore less annoying. The book was interesting and well written. I just didn’t feel any connection with Retta or Hemmingway.
