Spellfire Forgotten Realms Shandril Saga Book 1 Ed Greenwood 9780880385879 Books
The question I asked myself as I read this book was “If Dungeons and Dragons was not such a major industry, would Ed Greenwood’s novels be sitting on the shelves next to Tolkien and Rowling?” What I mean is, because his novels are packaged as source material for various adventure modules and campaign setting supplemental volumes, is Ed Greenwood overlooked as a great fantasy writer by literary critics of the genre? In the forward to the book Mr Greenwood describes cutting the book down to fit in a novel format, adjusting the book to be an introduction to the major characters and locations of Faerün, the world of Forgotten Realms fantasy setting. In an interview with the author on YouTube, he sets forth his intention that the Realms be a world for Dungeons and Dragons games to be set in, and as a common ground for fantasy writers to collaborate and evolve, cross pollinating their imaginations and honing their craft of writing. Thank you Ed, Greenwood and thank you to the numerous contributors to Forgotten Realms over the years.

great
Love Eds' writing, falling head over heels for The Forgotten Realms!!! I've been a lifelong gamer since D & D was the ONLY game, starting back with the old Tactical Studies Rules Blackmoor boxed set. I devoured ALL things Greyhawk & would hear of nothing else!! Due to the writings of Ed & many others I've become hopelessly enamored of the Realms!!!
Fun characters.
Ed Greenwood rocks!
I enjoyed this novel. I read mostly Elaine Cunningham and R.A Salvatore. And have only read a few Elminster books. But of course there's gaps if you do not read all of the authors in Forgotten Realms since each novel affected the realms as a whole. So I started into Ed Green Woods earlier works. Which this is his first novel.
The good thing is having read all of Elaine's and Salvatores books I recognized alot of the names in this novel. Which made it an easier read, and not having to try and remember every little character that pops up. Since there is alot of characters getting there "start" in this novel. Over all I enjoyed the book.
Oddly enough Ed Greenwood plays a female character very well. As Shandril throws her self into things she cant handle and having the rest of the world running and diving in to desperately keep her alive, so that parts very realistic LOL. But yeah in conclusion. An easy read, that is enjoyable. Good battle scene's where no one person is the focus. A fantastic book.
And a nice break from R.A Salvatore where he writes as if the world should stop and admire Drizzt and his fighting, even though there life is in peril. Which if your into his early novels isn't to bad. But it gets progressively worse as the Drizzt books are produced. Anyways that's another topic all together.
This was the very first Forgottem Realms book I had ever read. It got my journey started and several years later I still re-read this classic.
I really can't get enough of Elminster! There was a lot to take in with this book. Many new characters, cults, sects, kingdoms, etc.. I enjoyed the innocence of these freshly imagined characters and I can't wait to see them evolve in the next two novels.
